It’s not easy to quit smoking, we know. But smoking is terrible for you, you just have to stop. Just like, now. Now. Social smoking also counts, unhappiness. We asked all the ex-smokers we know about the tricks that we performed, well, trick for them, instead of giving you many good-meaning but useless advise on how to stop smoking. There are some USEFUL tips regarding how they gave up by the former smokers here.

1. Create a makeshift fag

“I used to fill an empty biro tube with tissue paper and suck on it to get the drag.”

2. Pick the right time

“It’s easier to quit in winter: standing outside in the rain and freezing cold to smoke is far less tempting than sunshine.”

3. Be prepared

“I made sure I always had a stash of Chupa Chup lollies for the times I was most likely to smoke, and suck on those instead.”

4. Look at the savings

“Every time I avoided buying a pack, I put the money in a clear jar to actually see the savings stack up. Then, at the end of each fortnight I’d reward myself with a treat.”

5. Scare yourself into it

“I ‘favourited’ some anti-smoking adverts on my phone. When you feel tempted, watching someone smoking a cigarette made of rotting flesh really puts you off.”

6. Set visual reminders

“I made an anti-smoking image my phone’s wallpaper. Every time I looked at it I couldn’t bear the thought of a fag.”

7. Make yourself busy

“Instead of having my normal 11am cigarette, I spent months doing something different at that time, like redoing my work or hair, making a posh coffee, having a stretch… anything that took five minutes, just long enough for the craving to pass.”

8. Work out

“As soon as I started exercising more, I wanted to smoke less. It made me feel so virtuous and healthy, I didn’t want to taint that with fags! Also, exercise gives you that endorphin high, so I didn’t need the kick I would normally have got from a cigarette anymore. And anyway, gym kit plus a fag is not a good look!”

9. Hold a cigarette

“I noticed how much I missed the act of just holding a cigarette, so I would put it in my hand as I talked. Often it hit the spot without me having to even smoke it!”

10. Get clever with it

“I used to break the whole of the tobacco end off and just hold the clean filter. It took about a year for the flicking action to go away.”

11. Remind yourself of the negatives

“I used to keep some old butts in a bottle. One smell was enough…. I’d go and spray my hair with perfume after that and not want to be anywhere near a cigarette.”

12. Seek out other smokers (but not for the reason you think)

“I used to follow people in the street who were smoking to smell their exhaled smoke. And it was always so gross….”

13. Up the ante

“I figured out that I was spending £150 a month on cigarettes, so I treated myself to a pair of expensive sunglasses that cost the same amount and made my flat mate promise to stamp on them if I had a smoke. It worked! Years later, I’m smoke free and still have the sunnies.”

14. Find something else you love

“I had to find something else to occupy my time so I started to read more and that did the trick! I totally forgot I wanted to smoke when I was busy with a page-turner.”

15. Keep quitting

“Quitting isn’t easy, but the only people who actually quit for good are the ones who keep quitting over and over. Don’t be hard on yourself for slip ups, just keep quitting!”

16. Don’t get cocky

After you’ve given up for a while, never fall into the trap of thinking you can have ‘just the odd one’. You can’t. Sorry.
